October doesn’t just bring us pumpkins and haunted attractions; it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Organizations and charities around Philadelphia host various events to improve the research and our knowledge of this disease.
Here are some to check out.
Have a beer for a good cause at Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.) on Thursday, Oct. 1 during Victory Brewing Company’s charity event: Victory Over Breast Cancer. From 4:30 to 6 p.m., proceeds from every purchased Kirsch Gose will go toward Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Fox Chase’s Irma H. Russo, MD Breast Cancer Research Laboratory.
For the ultimate workout: Susan G. Komen’s 3-Day Philadelphia will begin on Friday, Oct. 2 and run through Sunday, Oct. 4. This 60-mile walk designed for men and women will help raise funds for Susan G. Komen’s Research and Training Grant Program and also go toward local affiliate outreach programs.
Yards Brewing Company’s (901 N. Delaware Ave.) Tasting Room goes pink on Sunday, Oct. 4. From noon to 7 p.m., the brewery’s ever-so-popular PYNK ale will pour for a good cause as $1 from each pour goes toward the Tyanna Foundation. A $5 donation will also get you a limited-edition glass and a BreastFest magnet.
Every Monday throughout October, the Irish Pol (114 Market St.) will host Boobie Bingo — a charity game that benefits the Eileen Stein Jacoby Fund. Now seven years strong, this popular event runs from 8 to 10 p.m. and features beers, games, and raffles. All proceeds go toward the fund. The first bingo is on Monday, Oct. 5.
Walk it out! The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17. Starting at 7:30 a.m., the event will kick off at Memorial Hall West Fairmount Park (4231 Avenue of the Republic) and take participants on a 5K walk throughout Philadelphia. Sign up here.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22 BreastCancer.org will host its 6th annual Rock the Ribbon Gala at Vie Ballroom (600 N. Broad St.). Beginning at 7 p.m., the charity event will feature Tracy Davidson from NBC10, live music by Midnight Hour, and food and drink offerings.
The Flyers Wives team up with Fox Chase Cancer Center on Saturday, Oct. 24 during Hockey Fights Cancer at the Wells Fargo Center (3601 Broad St.). Before the start of the Flyers/Rangers game, a mobile screening unit will be present offering life-saving screening services to women.
