‘While you be imitating Al Capone, I be Nina Simone and defecating on your microphone…’
Father Time has been very kind to Lauryn Hill. Not only is the 40-year-old artist aging well, but her voice has also gotten deeper, giving it that rawness suitable for masterfully nailing Nina Simone classics.
Lauryn was one of the few artists chosen to record Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone, a compilation of the icon’s most memorable songs in honor of the upcoming Netflix documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? Although L. Boogie was originally tapped to cover two songs, she ended up doing six!
And we see why!
Ahead of both the album and documentary’s release comes Lauryn’s incredible cover of “The High Priestess of Soul’s” 1963 standard, “Feeling Good.” Ms. Hill’s raspy vocals invoke goosebumps as she channels her idol, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind that Lauryn’s performance was guided by Nina’s spirit.
In a comment on Nina’s music, Lauryn stated,
Because I fed on this music, both hers and lovers like her, like my basic food, I believed I always had a right to have a voice. Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift.
