The picture above shows some of my favorite fashions from this beautiful collection. Its so American with a spice of Nigerian culture through the patterns, and the style in which the ensembles hug the body.
African-inspired fashion has been hot on the runways for the past few seasons, but what’s harder to come by are African designers who are allowed to not only join but steer the conversation of what African fashion is capable of. Trust, it goes much further than Ankara dutch wax prints. Nancy Nwadire, creative designer of Iconic Invanity, is one Nigerian who is helping steer those conversations. She founded the brand in 2009, and has been moving quickly to have Iconic Invanity become an international sensation.
Nancy’s interest in fashion stems from her youth when she would watch her mother hand sew her brother and sister’s school uniform. “They were the cutest pair of checked pastel blue cotton dresses with yellow smocking I had ever seen,” she recalls. Nancy attended the London Institute and went on to create her line of elegant couture pieces that are meant to empower the already powerful woman. –
